Roma'da dos, evlenecek kadının kendisi, ailesi veya akrabaları tarafından gelecekteki kocaya veya kocanın ailesine, ailenin geçimini sağlamakla yükümlü olan kocanın, evlilik nedeniyle artan aile masraflarını karşılayabilmesi için verilen şeylerdi. Roma ailesinde eve ait tüm giderlerin erkek tarafına yüklenip kadın tarafına giderleri paylaşmayla ilgili bir zorunluluk yüklenmemesinin, hakkaniyete uymadığı düşünüldüğünden, zamanla dos vermek hukuki bir zorunluluğa dönüştü. Mülkiyet değeri olan her şey dos olarak verilebilirdi. Gelir getiren dos daha hoş karşılanırdı. Klasik dönemde; dotis datio, dotis dictio, legatum dotis constituendae, dos kurmanın üç farklı yoluydu. Evlilik sona ererse, kadının evlendiği erkek veya onun mirasçıları yasa gereği dos'u kadına bazen de dos’u verene iade etmekle yükümlü olduklarından, dos'un evlilik sırasında kocanın diğer mal varlığından ayrı tutulması fikri zamanla Roma'da yerleşti.

In Rome, dos were things given by the woman herself, her family or relatives to the future husband or the husband's family so that the husband, who was responsible for providing for the family, could meet the increasing family expenses due to the marriage. Since it was thought that it was not fair for all the expenses of the house to be borne by the man in the Roman family and not to impose an obligation on the woman to share the expenses, giving dos became a legal obligation over time. Anything of property value could be given as dos. Dos that provided income was more welcome. In the classical period; dotis datio, dotis dictio, legatum dotis constituendae were three different ways to establish dos. Since the man the woman married or his heirs were obliged by law to return the dos to the woman or sometimes to the person who gave the dos when the marriage ended, the idea of keeping the dos separate from the husband's other assets during the marriage gradually became established in Rome.
